Poor disposal of waste is at it’s pick In Fort Portal City as most of the illegal dumping sites are found within the slums which are surrounded by wetlands and rivers such as River Mpanga and River Mugunu, during heavy storms, water finds it’s way into the homes of these slum settlements which consume this polluted water which puts their lives at risk of waterborne disease and eventually death. During the rainy season the waste dumped in ungazetted areas are flush into the flood plains where most of the slums,wetlands, and agricultural land and drainage channels are found. This reduces the health and environment standards for human and livestock life in such areas, exposing the poor households to waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, bilharzia, loss of lives and property to floods,TERI LTD has put in place sustainable means in recycling and upcycling waste, unblocking waste channels to allow movement of water, sensitizing of these slum dwellers on proper waste dispose.
